Het is een ongelofelijke buitenkans dat de Universiteit Leiden en Rijksmuseum Volkenkunde de wereldberoemde Farida Mohammed Ali en haar Iraqi Maqam Ensemble hebben weten te contracteren voor een eenmalig concert in het kader van '400 jaar Arabisch in Leiden' op zaterdag 21 september om 15.00 uur in het Rijksmuseum Volkenkunde.
Deze Iraakse zangeres staat bekend als boegbeeld  van het muzikale genre ‘Maqam al Iraqi’.
Het Iraqi Maqam Ensemble is afkomstig uit Bagdad, een historische stad die samen met Cairo en Damascus de belangrijkste klassieke muziektradities van de Arabische wereld herbergt.
Het genre werd in 2003 door de Unesco opgenomen in de lijst van Immaterieel Erfgoed van de Mensheid.

The prominent British newspaper The Guardian named her ‘The Mother of All Maqam’:
“…The Iraqi singer Farida Mohammad Ali truly is a one-off. She is one of only a handful of artists to have mastered the ancient musical discipline of maqam – a lifetime's pursuit, as the singer must develop not only a command of complex melodies and scales but also the scripture and philosophy behind them. He must also, traditionally, be a man, the performance of maqam being a male preserve throughout the Arab world…”

Since 2003 maqam is on Unesco's list of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Vanaf dinsdag 10 september is de unieke tentoonstelling 'Verlangen naar Mekka - De reis van de pelgrim' te zien in Rijksmuseum Volkenkunde.
In deze tentoonstelling over de pelgrimsreis naar Mekka kunt u zien hoe moslims uit diverse landen deze belangrijke gebeurtenis voorbereiden, de reis zelf, de rituelen, en de ervaringen van uiteenlopende mensen komen aan bod. De tentoonstelling is gemaakt in samenwerking met het British Museum in Londen waar deze indrukwekkende tentoonstelling begin 2012 alle records heeft verbroken.

'Longing for Mecca - the Journey of the pilgrim', the first extensive exhibition devoted to the subject of Hajj in the Netherlands, opens on Tuesday 10 September in Leiden's Rijksmuseum Volkenkunde (National Museum of Ethnology)
For a quarter of the world’s population, Mecca is the place you must have been once in the course of your life. Believers from all over the world head off to the holy city to pray every day, and millions set off each year on the true pilgrimage to Mecca.
Today there are close to one million Muslims living in the Netherlands, for whom the pilgrimage to Mecca is a very important ritual within their religion. The Netherlands is a culturally diverse society in which Islam is taking a prominent role in the lives of many. Therefore Rijksmuseum Volkenkunde aims to provide a polyphone image on Hajj and Islam to create understanding and respect.

In mei 2013 is het vierhonderd jaar geleden dat in Leiden Thomas Erpenius (1584-1624) als eerste hoogleraar Arabisch in Nederland zijn oratie uitsprak 'Over de Voortreffelijkheid en Waardigheid van het Arabisch'. De arabistiek in Leiden is een diepgewortelde lokale traditie die in de hele wereld bekend is. Geleerden als Scaliger, Erpenius, Golius, De Goeje en Snouck Hurgronje genieten wereldfaam.

Achter de Leidse professoren en hun universiteit bevond zich een complete lokale infrastructuur. Die bestond uit oosterse drukkers zoals Elzevier en Brill, boekverkopers en veilingmeesters. De Leidse arabistiek is een treffend symbool van de 'blik op de ander' door de loop van de eeuwen heen. Het getuigt van een kosmopolitische nieuwsgierigheid naar de exotische wereld van de islam, vermengd met een gezonde portie ondernemingszin.

De tentoonstelling schetst de geschiedenis van deze wetenschappelijke traditie aan de hand van portretten van voornamelijk Leidse hoogleraren Arabisch en hun nalatenschap. Bovendien zijn er boeken, prenten en handschriften te zien. Samensteller en gastconservator van de tentoonstelling is dr. Arnoud Vrolijk, conservator oosterse handschriften en oude drukken van de Universitaire Bibliotheken Leiden.

May 2013 marked the 400th anniversary of the inaugural lecture by Leiden’s first professor of Arabic studies, Thomas Erpenius (1584–1624): ‘On the Excellence and Dignity of Arabic’. In Leiden, Arabic studies are a deep-rooted local tradition that is well known all over the world. Scholars such as Scaliger, Erpenius, Golius, De Goeje, and Snouck Hurgronje have become world renowned.

These Leiden professors and their university were backed up by an entire local infrastructure of book sellers, auctioneers, and publishing houses focusing on the Near and Middle East, such as Elsevier and Brill. Arabic studies in Leiden forms a powerful symbol of ‘perspectives on the Other’ through the centuries and attest to a cosmopolitan curiosity about the exotic world of Islam, combined with a healthy dose of personal initiative.

This exhibition sketches the history of a research tradition, presenting Arabic professors, mainly from Leiden University, and their legacies. The exhibits will also include books, prints, and manuscripts. The organizer and guest curator is Dr Arnoud Vrolijk, curator of Oriental manuscripts and rare books at the Leiden University Libraries.

In september openen twee tentoonstellingen  die onderdeel uitmaken van het '400 Jaar Arabisch in Leiden' programma:  'Voortreffelijk en waardig, 400 jaar Arabische studies in Nederland' in Rijksmuseum van Oudheden en de unieke tentoonstelling 'Verlangen naar Mekka-de reis van de pelgrim' in Rijksmuseum Volkenkunde.  Meer informatie over beide tentoonstellingen volgt snel. Blindproefspel Arabische keuken voor kinderen (Hortus Botanicus)
Marjolein de Vlaam is auteur van het boek ‘Wereldeters’. Kinderen zijn de beste eters die er zijn. In principe lusten ze alles; zijn het wereldeters. Als je ze maar kunt boeien aan tafel. Het geheim is kinderlijk eenvoudig en zal ze in tijdens dit spel in de Hortus Botanicus demonstreren: vertel leuke verhalen en weetjes over het land waar het eten vandaan komt. Door te vertellen over landen, culturen en eetgewoonten heb je de aandacht van je kinderen en wordt de avondmaaltijd een groot succes.

September will see the opening of two wonderful exhibitions that are part of the '400 Years of Arabic in Leiden' programme; '400 Years of Arabic Studies in the Netherlands' (Rijksmuseum van Oudheden) that sketches the history of a research tradition, presenting Arabic professors, mainly from Leiden University, and their legacies. Arabic cuisine blind taste test for children (Hortus Botanicus)
Children have a unbelievable gastronomic fearlessness. Kids are happy, healthy eaters as long as you intrigue them by telling stories about the food's origin and history.
The Hortus Botanicus hosts a blind taste test for children presented by Marjolein de Vlaam. Marjolein is the author of 'Wereldeters', an educational cookbook for kids and their parents.
The workshop will be in Dutch but non-Dutch speaking children can certainly participate.

Bij het Rijksmuseum van Oudheden is dan het 1-daagse symposium  'The Learning and Teaching of Arabic in Early Modern Europe'.

Please do not forget to submit your paper proposal for the linguistic conference 'Arabic in Context' that will be held at Leiden University on 2 and 3 November 2013. Your submission is welcome until 15 August.

On 16 November, the National Museum of Antiquities in Leiden hosts an international symposium on 'The Learning and Teaching of Arabic in Early Modern Europe'.  This symposium will explore and celebrate the methods, the scholarly significance and the institutional background of Arabic teaching and learning at early modern European academies and universities.  Two keynote lectures on the Learning of Arabic in the Netherlands and in England will frame a series of presentations by leading authorities in the history of European Arabic studies.

'Plants from the Arabian Nights' lecture

If you are looking for something special to do this Wednesday evening, please come to the Hortus Botanicus in Leiden where Gerda van Uffelen, collection manager at the Leiden Hortus Botanicus will tell you everything you always wanted to know about some of the items in the 'Plants of 1001 Nights' exhibition.

Afterwards you can take a leisurely stroll through the Hortus Botanicus and learn about the other plants in the Hortus' amazing collection.

De Leidse studievereniging Sheherazade organiseert op donderdag 1 augustus haar eerste Iftar in het Paviljoen van Rijksmuseum Volkenkunde

Iftar is de naam voor de maaltijd die moslims tijdens Ramadan iedere dag na zonsondergang eten. Met deze maaltijd breken ze de periode van vasten tussen zonsopgang en zonsondergang. De Iftar start traditioneel met het eten van 3 dadels en wordt meestal in een groter gezelschap genuttigd.

Sheherazade nodigt u van harte uit om samen de iftar te houden (registratie is noodzakelijk)

Sheherazade, the student organisation of Middle Eastern studies, organises its first iftar on Thursday 1 August . Location for this event is the beautiful Pavilion of Rijksmuseum Volkenkunde
Sheherazade warmly invites you to participate.

Iftar is the meal that breaks the day of fasting during Ramadan, when Muslim families and communities eat together after sunset. Iftar is taken right after Maghrib time, which is around sunset. Traditionally but not mandatory, three dates are eaten to break the fast in emulation of the Prophet Muhammad, who broke his fast in this manner.

In het kader van '400 Jaar Arabisch in Leiden', is er een wandeling samengesteld langs adressen die de geschiedenis vertellen van de relatie tussen Leiden en (de studie van) het Midden Oosten sinds de 16e eeuw.
Voor iedereen die een nieuwe kijk op Leiden en/of haar verweving met het Midden Oosten en de islam wil krijgen.
Voorkennis is niet nodig.

In de zomermaanden zijn er 3 wandelingen gepland.
Als u nog snel mee wilt wandelen voordat u op vakantie gaat: de eerste is zondag 21 juli.
Plaatsen zijn beperkt dus schrijf u snel in.

Everyone is welcome to join. No special knowledge of the Middle East or Islam is required.

The first series of 3 tours (in Dutch) is open for registration now. The first tour is scheduled for Sunday 21 July
There is a limited number of spots available for each tour so please register as soon as possible.
