(English text is below) Met de drukbezochte lezing The Wisdom of the Arabs opende Petra Sijpesteijn op 4 februari '400 jaar Arabisch in Leiden'. On February 4, Petra Sijpesteijn kicked off the '400 years of Arabic in Leiden' celebrations with a lecture called 'The Wisdom of the Arabs'. The lecture is the first in a series of activities that Leiden University has organized to commemorate this important event. In her lecture Professor Sijpesteijn referred to the very first chair of Arabic in Leiden, Thomas Erpenius. According to him learning Arabic allowed students to access Arab wisdom; it provides a level of insight into a civilisation with unsurpassable contributions in the fields of medicine, philosophy, mathematics, geography, history and poetry, The lecture will become available in some form soon. Until then you can read some articles about the lecture (in Dutch) on the Media page or take a look at a first selection of pictures taken at the event. |
